Garage Fit: Will Your Cars Fit in Your Garage?

Enter your garage’s inside width and depth, pick your door and your vehicles, and Garage Fit draws the plan to scale: where each vehicle parks, how far each door opens, how much room is left in front, and what a workbench or shelves take away.

Sizes are the largest model in each class, so real cars are the same or smaller.

How Garage Fit works

  • Vehicle sizes are worst case. Each class uses the largest current model we found, rounded up to the next inch, so your own car is the same size or smaller. Where a maker doesn’t publish the width with mirrors, we add 12 in to the body width for cars and crossovers, 16 in for full-size SUVs and half-ton pickups and 26 in for heavy-duty pickups, from the mirror widths that are published (Ford, Edmunds, ADAC).
  • Vehicles drive straight in. Each one stays in line with its door opening, keeping 3 in between its mirrors and the jambs when there’s room. If the mirrors can’t pass, the tool tries them folded and says so.
  • Door space is measured from the body. “Opens fully” means 30 in for cars, small SUVs and minivans, 33 in for large sedans, 3-row SUVs and midsize pickups, 36 in for full-size SUVs and pickups and 40 in for sports cars. “Tight” means 24 to 30 in, the range parking-lot design guides use. Two vehicles share the gap between them, on the assumption that their doors don’t open at the same moment.
  • Depth: 12 in between the rear bumper and the closed door (change it under More settings), then a 3 ft walkway in front of the vehicle or your back-wall storage.
  • Height: 3 in or more under the door counts as a fit. The open door can hang slightly below the header, so measure your own if it’s close. See garage door height for trucks, vans and roof boxes.
Garage Fit gives a plan, not a guarantee. Measure your garage at its narrowest points (posts, steps, water heaters and door tracks all count) and check your own vehicle’s spec sheet when the result is tight.

* Estimated: at least one model in the class has no published width with mirrors. Sizes from Edmunds features and specs pages and maker spec sheets (Ford, Harley-Davidson, Club Car), checked October 2026. Door space for motorcycles and golf carts is standing room beside the vehicle, our own judgment. See average car dimensions and truck and SUV sizes.

Questions people ask

How much space do you need between cars in a garage?

About 30 in between the bodies lets one person open a front door and get out comfortably, and 36 in suits full-size SUVs and pickups with longer doors. Parking-lot design guides treat 23 to 27 in as the minimum. Two cars can share one gap if their doors don’t open at the same time.

How deep does a garage need to be for a pickup?

A crew cab with a 6.5 ft bed is up to 246 in (20 ft 6 in) long. Add 12 in at the door and a 3 ft walkway and you need about 24 ft 6 in inside, more with a workbench. A 20 ft deep garage is too short for it.

Will two cars fit through a 16 ft garage door?

Two cars or small SUVs fit, but driving straight in with a few inches at each jamb leaves about 2 ft between them, which is tight for the middle driver’s door. Two full-size pickups only fit with mirrors folded. An 18 ft door or two single doors gives more room. See double garage door sizes.

What size garage do I need for two cars?

For two midsize vehicles, about 20 ft wide by 21 ft deep inside is the least that leaves comfortable space for both drivers’ doors, and only with two single doors or an 18 ft door. With one 16 ft door the cars park about 2 ft apart however wide the garage is. Add 2 to 3 ft of depth for a workbench. Try your own vehicles in the tool above, or see 2 car garage dimensions.
