Garage Door Width: Standard Sizes for Single and Double Doors
Standard garage door widths are 8, 9 and 10 ft for a single door and 16 ft for a double. Doubles also come 12 to 18 ft wide, and up to 20 ft to order. A 9 ft door leaves about 12 in on each side of a Tesla Model Y’s mirrors and about 6 in beside a Ford F-150’s.
Garage door width is set by the car, and specifically by its mirrors. Doors come in a short list of standard widths, and the right one is the narrowest that leaves a few inches each side of your widest vehicle with its mirrors out. This page gives the standard garage door widths, the room each kind of vehicle leaves in each one, why a finished opening is narrower than its name, and how much wall a door needs beside it. For heights and the full size chart, see garage door sizes.

The typical garage door width is 8 or 9 ft for a single and 16 ft for a double. Nobody publishes an average, and the makers don’t agree on which single is most common: Clopay names 8 × 7 and 9 × 7 together, and CHI says most single doors are 8 ft wide. At Home Depot, 9 × 7 had the most listings on October 7, 2026 (65, against 54 for 8 × 7), so 9 ft is the most listed single width. 16 × 7 had 51 (Home Depot).
In between and beyond these, makers build to order. Clopay builds some models in 2-inch width steps (8 ft 2 in, 8 ft 4 in and so on), and Garaga builds doors 4 to 20 ft wide to the nearest inch.
How much room each side of your car
Spec sheets lead with body width, but the mirrors are the widest part of a car, and they are what pass closest to the jambs. Most makers don’t publish a width with mirrors, so this table uses the vehicle classes from Garage Fit: each value is the largest model in the class, rounded up to the next inch.
| Vehicle class | Body | With mirrors | 8 ft door | 9 ft door | 10 ft door |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact car (Corolla, Civic) | 72 in | 84 in est. | 6.0 in | 12.0 in | 18.0 in |
| Midsize sedan (Camry, Accord) | 74 in | 86 in est. | 5.0 in | 11.0 in | 17.0 in |
| Sports car (Mustang, Corvette) | 77 in | 85 in est. | 5.5 in | 11.5 in | 17.5 in |
| Small SUV (RAV4, CR-V, Model Y) | 76 in | 87 in est. | 4.5 in | 10.5 in | 16.5 in |
| Full-size sedan (Charger, Model S) | 80 in | 87 in | 4.5 in | 10.5 in | 16.5 in |
| Midsize pickup (Tacoma, Ranger) | 78 in | 89 in est. | 3.5 in | 9.5 in | 15.5 in |
| 3-row SUV or minivan (Explorer, Odyssey) | 80 in | 91 in est. | 2.5 in | 8.5 in | 14.5 in |
| Full-size SUV (Tahoe, Expedition) | 81 in | 97 in est. | Won’t fit | 5.5 in | 11.5 in |
| Extended full-size SUV (Suburban) | 84 in | 98 in est. | Won’t fit | 5.0 in | 11.0 in |
| Half-ton pickup (F-150, Silverado, Ram) | 82 in | 99 in est. | Won’t fit | 4.5 in | 10.5 in |
| Half-ton pickup, tow mirrors | 82 in | 106 in | Won’t fit | 1.0 in | 7.0 in |
| Heavy-duty pickup (F-250, Ram 2500) | 82 in | 108 in est. | Won’t fit | None (0 in) | 6.0 in |
| Golf cart, 4-seat | 50 in | 50 in | 23.0 in | 29.0 in | 35.0 in |
Room is per side at the mirrors, with the vehicle centered, measured to the door’s nominal width. “est.” means the model that sets the class figure has no published mirror width, so we added the top of the published range, rounded up, to its body width: 8 in for sports cars, 12 in for other cars, SUVs and minivans, 16 in for full-size SUVs and half-ton pickups, 26 in for heavy-duty pickups. Published examples: Tesla Model Y 83.8 in, Ford Explorer 89.3 in, Chrysler Pacifica 90.4 in, Ford Expedition 94.6 in, Ford F-150 95.7 in, Ford F-250 105.9 in (Edmunds, Ford, Ford Super Duty).
Two things stand out. Cars, small SUVs and minivans all pass an 8 ft door, with 2½ to 6 in each side. Full-size SUVs and pickups don’t, with their mirrors out, and need 9 ft. The Ford F-150 is the edge case: at 95.7 in across its standard mirrors (Ford) it passes a 96 in door with 0.15 in each side, which in practice means folding them. Its mirrors fold to 83.6 in.
Folding helps everyone. A Model Y’s mirrors fold from 83.8 to 78.0 in (Tesla), a Ford Expedition’s from 94.6 to 84.6 in, and an F-250’s tow mirrors from 105.9 to 85.3 in (Ford).
Clear width: your opening is narrower than its name
The width of a garage door is the width of the opening it fills, jamb to jamb. Clopay’s installation manual says the opening, minus the stop molding, is the “same size as door”. But the trim and weatherstrip fitted to the jambs stick into the opening. In a worked example, builder Tim Carter takes a 9 ft wide door and notes that “you lose about 2 and 1/4 inches in width” once the finished trim and weatherstripping are on the jambs, leaving 105¾ in between the weatherstrips (Ask the Builder).
That is a worked example, not a measurement or a standard, and your trim may take more or less. But 2¼ in matters at the tight end of the table: take about 1⅛ in off each figure above. A half-ton pickup with standard mirrors then has about 3⅜ in each side of a 9 ft door, and one with tow mirrors has none. Carter’s advice is a 10 ft door for a full-size heavy-duty pickup.
To find your clear width:
- Open the door and measure across the opening at the narrowest point between the weatherstrips, at the height of your mirrors.
- Measure jamb to jamb too, with the door open (Overhead Door). That is the door size to order. Measure at the bottom, middle and top and use the narrowest.
- Measure your vehicle across its mirrors with a tape, if the maker doesn’t publish the figure.
If you are framing a new opening, the framed (rough) opening should be 3 in wider than the door (Angi), which leaves room for the wood jambs. More in garage door rough opening.
Should a garage door be 8 or 9 feet wide?
Garaga says most cars fit an 8 ft door easily, and recommends 9 or 10 ft for pickups. The numbers above agree:
- 8 ft works for cars, small SUVs and midsize pickups: 3½ to 6 in each side at the mirrors before trim. It is tight for 3-row SUVs and minivans, at 2½ in.
- 9 ft is the width for full-size SUVs and half-ton pickups with standard mirrors, and the one to pick if you’d rather not think about mirrors. It also gives you room to change cars later.
- 10 ft is for heavy-duty pickups and anything with tow mirrors. It leaves about 7 in each side of an F-250’s tow mirrors, before trim.
Do garage doors come 10 feet wide? Yes. Clopay, Amarr and Garaga all list 10 ft as a standard single width. Stores rarely stock it: the only 10 × 7 at Home Depot on October 7, 2026 was a roll-up door (Home Depot), so expect to order a sectional door through a dealer.
The door only has to let the car through. Getting in and out happens inside, where an open car door takes about 2½ ft (a San Francisco study cited by the FHWA), and that room comes from the garage’s width, not the door’s. See single car garage size and 2 car garage dimensions.
Double garage door widths
The standard double, or 2 car, garage door is 16 ft (192 in) wide. Clopay says it fits two average sedans, crossovers or smaller SUVs, and that a pair of full-size trucks or larger SUVs still fits with “a touch more precision”. With mirrors out, the numbers disagree: two Ford F-150s (95.7 in each) leave 0.6 in in total, and the class figures in the table below don’t fit at all, so in practice both drivers fold their mirrors. Garaga calls a 14 ft double “possible but tight” and recommends 16 ft for two vehicles. Wider doubles are 18 ft, and 20 ft at the top end.
Here is the room left with two of the same class side by side, mirrors out, split evenly between the three gaps (left, middle and right):
| Two of these | 16 ft door | 18 ft door | 20 ft door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small SUV (87 in est.) | 6.0 in | 14.0 in | 22.0 in |
| 3-row SUV or minivan (91 in est.) | 3.3 in | 11.3 in | 19.3 in |
| Full-size SUV (97 in est.) | Won’t fit | 7.3 in | 15.3 in |
| Half-ton pickup (99 in est.) | Won’t fit | 6.0 in | 14.0 in |
| Heavy-duty pickup (108 in est.) | Won’t fit | None (0 in) | 8.0 in |
Room per gap = (door width − 2 × mirror width) ÷ 3. Class mirror widths as in the table above. Take off about 1⅛ in at each outer gap for trim.
Two pickups or full-size SUVs need an 18 ft door to sit side by side with their mirrors out. Check the opener if you go wide: LiftMaster’s wall-mounted 98022 is rated for doors up to 18 ft wide (LiftMaster). More in double garage door sizes.
Room beside the opening
A door fills its opening, but its vertical tracks sit outside it. They mount on the inside wall just beyond each side of the opening, so the wall needs some width there, called side room:
| Side room needed, each side | Who says so |
|---|---|
| 3 in | Raynor, all models |
| 3½ in | Wayne Dalton |
| 3¾ in | Clopay and Amarr, standard and torsion springs |
| 5½ in | Clopay, EZ-SET extension springs |
| up to 6 in | Overhead Door, for the vertical track |
| 8½ in | On the side of a wall-mounted opener (LiftMaster 98022, Garaga) |
Sources: Raynor, Wayne Dalton manual, Clopay installation manual and FAQ, Amarr, Overhead Door, Garaga.
So the wall a door needs is its width plus about 7½ in: 115½ in for a 9 ft door and 199½ in for a 16 ft one, with Clopay’s 3¾ in each side. Put a wall-mounted opener on one side and the 9 ft door needs 120¼ in.
Twenty feet is the minimum two-car garage width in some city codes (Chula Vista, West Valley City), and it is just enough for two 9 ft singles. We found no maker’s figure for the post between two doors. The tracks alone need 7½ in (3¾ in for each door), and 9 in where torsion springs attach above the openings (Clopay). Posters on the Garage Journal forum suggest posts of 18 and 24 in. Two singles cost wall width, but if one door breaks the other still works (Garaga).
Questions people ask
What is the standard garage door width?
8 or 9 ft (96 or 108 in) for a single door and 16 ft (192 in) for a double. 10 ft singles and 18 ft doubles are the common wider sizes.
Should a garage door be 8 or 9 feet wide?
8 ft is enough for cars, small SUVs and minivans. Choose 9 ft for a full-size SUV or pickup: their mirrors are about 95 to 99 in across, and an 8 ft door is 96 in.
Do garage doors come 10 feet wide?
Yes. 10 ft (120 in) is a standard single width at Clopay, Amarr and Garaga, usually ordered through a dealer. It is the width to choose for a heavy-duty pickup with tow mirrors.
How wide is a residential 2 car garage door?
Usually 16 ft (192 in). 18 ft (216 in) is the common wider size and the one two pickups need side by side. 12 and 14 ft doubles exist but are tight for two vehicles.
Can a garage door be 20 feet wide?
Yes. Amarr lists 20 ft as a standard double width, Clopay says extra-wide doors go “sometimes up to 20 feet”, and Garaga gives 20 ft as its recommended maximum. Check the opener: some wall-mounted openers are rated only to 18 ft wide.
What is the average garage door width?
There is no published average. The typical single door is 8 or 9 ft wide and the typical double 16 ft.
Do the door tracks make the opening narrower?
No. The vertical tracks mount on the wall just beyond each side of the opening, in the 3 to 3¾ in of side room the makers ask for. What narrows the opening is the trim and weatherstrip on the jambs: about 2¼ in from a 9 ft door in a builder’s worked example (Ask the Builder).
